The Race

In December 2022, we will embark on the challenge of a lifetime. Propelling ourselves 3,000 nautical miles unaided from La Gomera in the Canary Islands to Antigua in the Caribbean – The Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge.

Pitting ourselves against the elements, our four person team will be rowing on and off in 2 hours stints constantly for an average of 49 days, pushing our mental and physical limits – to raise awareness of Ocean Pollution.

The Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge is an endurance race across one of the world’s most dangerous oceans. We will be enduring; sleep deprivation, dehydration, huge calorie deficits, hallucinations, salt sores, 60ft waves and physical and mental exhaustion as we navigate one of the busiest shipping zones in the world.

The Cause

At least 8 million tons of plastic end up in our oceans every year. Floating plastic debris are currently the most abundant items of marine litter. Waste plastic makes up 80% of all marine debris from surface waters to deep-sea sediments. Plastic has been detected on shorelines of all the continents, with more plastic materials found near popular tourist destinations and densely populated areas (source).

We are using the Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Challenge as a global platform to raise awareness of plastics in the Ocean, and to helping find sustainable solutions to ending the ocean pollutions crisis.  Promoting and highlighting the outstanding work in this field currently being undertaken at Portsmouth University, with any proceeds being donated to support this incredible work.
